"European working tools are being manufactured from he viewpoint of being gentle to the people and to lay stress on environment and safety, which means now to put priority on softwares than hardwares. Products of the U.S.A. as well as of Asia have not come to this point yet. Considerations to software side could not be seen yet to Japanese products as Europeans," Mr. Aida said.

One of his other purposes was to promote business talks with Asian enterprises. Of total export of Japanese working tools overseas, Asian market accounted for more than 50% in 1993.

Mr. Aida described about his company's position for the Fair that up to 1980, it was to open up an export market to the North America, and from 1981, it was to promote export sales to European market, and after 1985, it has become to promote export to Asian countries. "While export to Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia has been increased since around 1988, we see more increase to Philippines, Malaysia and China in recent years," he said.

Almost of export business was to North America up to 1980. However, competitiveness of Japanese working tools had deteriorated due to increased manufacturing costs by so-called oil shock and added by Yen evaluation against U.S. Dollar. Although Japanese share of imported working tools in the U.S.A. recorded more than 60% in 1976, it dramatically decreased to 7.8% in 1994. Taiwan, in response to such phenomenon, increased its share in the U.S.A., and in 1983, such products from Taiwan accounted to 60% of imported working tools market in the U.S.A. Then after, Taiwan's export to the U.S.A. gradually being decreased to 51% of the market in 1994, and China now has increased its export to this market instead.

During 1975-1980, after so-called oil shock, export of Japanese working tools to European market was increased as West Germany Mark currency was evaluated with its low dependability to petroleum. However, as Yen currency became stronger than Mark and added by Taiwanese exportersﾕ detouring to European Market as they were pushed out from the U.S.A. market by China, Japanese working tools, in turn, were eventually pushed out from there.

And after 1985 on, Japanese working tools started to increase export to Asian countries. In those days when Japanese working tools went around North American and European markets, Asian countries have achieved significant economic growth and the market in these areas has developed as well. The working tool market closely relates with progress of industrialization of a country. Since enterprises in Japan and the U.S.A., European countries, as well as Taiwan and South Korea moved their production bases into Asian countries, demand for working tools in these areas has dramatically expanded. Japanese export of working tools to Asian countries in 1994 accounted to more than half of its total export.
